Day 4

Feb 2nd

Golf and Tours

This day was pretty much a free day for the non golfers to mosey about as they saw fit. This morning we all bid farewell and safe journey to Rich Wilson and his wife Dawn, who had business engagements back home. We said good bye to Ed Peruta who also had business to take care of. Those of us remaining went to breakfast together and broke up into groups for personal tours. Ron McCarville and Steve LeGrande each found a pillow with his name on it and used it thoroughly for half of the afternoon. The Herrera's had places that they wished to tour as a family and went there. Harvey Newton, Dennis Fryrear, "Dick" Dickerson, Joe McLaughlin (Lima 3/5) and I went on a tour of MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) in San Diego, arranged with some assistance from Joe's son, an active duty Marine.

MCRD brought back some fond and not so fond memories from 32 years ago. Boy had this place changed. The Quonset huts were gone. How did they expect and old former Marine to find his way around? We were met by the 1st Sergeant of one of the recruit companies and he gave us a tour of the new squad bays, the grinder (parade ground for all of you non Marine types), the Drill Instructor Memorial and the Marine Corps Museum. "Dick" Dickerson, a former DI (Drill Instructor), was thoroughly enjoying himself. The museum is not to be missed. The entire history of the Corps is laid out for you in a series of displays and dioramas. You are not just able to view uniforms and firearms, but art work and edged weapons as well.

We said good bye to "Dick" Dickerson in San Diego, since he had to be at a business meeting the next day and returned to Camp Pendleton.

This tour was followed in the evening, with a dinner hosted by Col. Bob and Rene Tilley at their home in Fallbrooke. Their home was beautiful, comfortable and very tastefully decorated. The meal was absolutely delicious, and the comradery was out of this world. We all felt like we had come home. During and after dinner, many stories were told while seated around a brick fire pit near the patio. Group photos were taken and we reluctantly took our leave, vowing to return next year.

Sleep came fast on us. Tomorrow was to be another full day. Little did we know how full!!
